
Pig Kidney Transplant Sustains US Patient for 271 Days, Setting New Record
A genetically modified pig kidney has maintained functionality within a human patient for a record-breaking 271 days. The recipient, Mike Dorsch, aged 54, was supported by the organ while awaiting a suitable human kidney transplant.
This pioneering xenotransplantation was performed at NYU Langone Health in New York. The pig kidney, sourced from an animal with 10 genetic modifications, was transplanted into Mr. Dorsch, who suffers from end-stage kidney disease.
The extended survival of the transplanted organ underscores the potential for animal-to-human transplants to address the severe global shortage of donor organs. Previous attempts at similar procedures have typically seen organ function for significantly shorter durations.
While this represents a considerable advance, the long-term viability and broader application of xenotransplantation still face numerous immunological and ethical challenges. Researchers continue to monitor Mr. Dorsch’s progress and analyse the factors contributing to the organ's sustained function.
