Police Call Handling Failures Contributed to Friends' Deaths on Welsh Mountain Ridge
North Wales Police's inadequate escalation of a 999 call contributed to the deaths of Jayden Long and Eddie Hill, a coroner has concluded. The two friends died after becoming disoriented on a mountain ridge in Eryri (Snowdonia), prompting a coroner to issue a stark warning that similar procedural failures could jeopardise future lives.
The incident highlighted critical deficiencies in the force's call handling protocols, particularly concerning dropped emergency calls. The inquest found that a 999 call made by one of the individuals was not appropriately escalated or followed up, delaying a crucial response that might have prevented the fatalities.
Authorities have been instructed to review and rectify these procedural shortcomings to ensure such lapses do not recur. The families of Mr. Long and Mr. Hill have called for accountability and assurances that robust measures will be implemented to prevent similar tragedies.
