Rail Regulator Blocks New West Coast Main Line Services, Citing Delay Risks
The Office of Rail and Road (ORR), the UK's rail regulator, has refused permission for new train services on the West Coast Main Line. The regulator concluded that the proposed additions would "likely increase delays and cancelled trains" across the network, prioritising operational stability over expanding service provision.
Grand Union Trains had sought to introduce a new route connecting London Euston with Stirling in Scotland, along with a separate service to Mossley Hill in Liverpool. These proposals aimed to offer greater choice for passengers, but the ORR's analysis indicated a detrimental impact on overall punctuality and reliability.
The decision underscores the ongoing challenges in managing capacity on Britain's busiest rail corridors. The ORR's assessment focused on the potential for timetable conflicts and the knock-on effects that could propagate across the interdependent network, ultimately affecting existing operators and passenger experience.
