Reform UK Suspends Hylton Castle Councillor Glenn Gibbins Over Racist Online Posts
Glenn Gibbins, elected to represent the Hylton Castle ward on Sunderland City Council, faces suspension from Reform UK over allegations of racist online commentary. The claims include a post from March 2024, since deleted, suggesting the Nigerian population in Sunderland should be melted down to “fill in potholes.”
Initially, differing accounts emerged regarding Gibbins's status, with Durham County Council's deputy leader, Darren Grimes, stating a suspension had occurred. Reform UK subsequently confirmed an investigation was underway, later moving to a full suspension.
Beyond the racist allegations, Gibbins has also been accused of misogynistic comments in earlier posts.
Sunderland City Council has clarified that all newly elected councillors must formally accept their roles, which mandates adherence to a code of conduct. As of 15:00 BST, Gibbins had not yet accepted the position, with a two-month window from the election date provided for formal acceptance.
Darren Grimes commented that the situation highlighted “a failure of the vetting process.” Richard Tice, Reform UK's deputy leader, declined to directly address the allegations, stating only that he condemned “anything that is wrong and inappropriate,” while asserting voters supported Reform despite such “smearing and sneering.”
