
Rhys Hibbert Undergoes World's First Live AI-Assisted Brain Tumour Removal
Rhys Hibbert, a 40-year-old from London, has become the first patient globally to undergo brain surgery guided by real-time artificial intelligence. The pioneering operation, performed at a London hospital, successfully excised a tumour that doctors had warned could lead to Mr Hibbert losing his sight.
During the intricate procedure, the AI system continuously processed data from an advanced intraoperative MRI scanner, providing the surgical team with immediate, colour-coded updates on the tumour's precise location and size. This augmented reality overlay, projected onto the surgeon's view, allowed for unprecedented accuracy in distinguishing between healthy brain tissue and the tumour.
Surgeons reported that the AI's ability to offer dynamic, up-to-the-second mapping of the tumour's margins was crucial. Previously, such operations relied on pre-operative scans and the surgeon's experience, often requiring a degree of estimation as the brain shifts during surgery. The new technology offers a significant advance in precision, potentially reducing surgical risks and improving patient outcomes for complex neurological conditions.
