Wildfire-Affected Residents Erase Greenpeace Mural of Andy Burnham From Scorched Moorland
Residents near the village of Uppermill, Saddleworth, have removed a mural painted by Greenpeace depicting Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham on wildfire-damaged moorland. The artwork, placed on a scorched hillside, featured Burnham's image alongside the text 'Our house is on fire, Andy.'
Greenpeace stated the mural aimed to highlight the urgency of climate action following extensive wildfires in the region. However, local residents expressed resentment, arguing that the group had trespassed on private land to create the piece, causing further disturbance to a community already grappling with the environmental aftermath of the fires.
The land, privately owned, had been severely impacted by recent wildfires, leading to significant ecological damage and disruption for local populations. The swift removal of the mural by residents underscores local frustration with what was perceived as an opportunistic and unhelpful intervention by the environmental group.
