Rogue Builder Absconds With £14,000, Leaves Couple's Essex Home Dismantled

A cowboy builder reportedly dismantled a couple's Essex home and disappeared with £14,000, leaving them with an uninhabitable property. Mark and Jane Gutteridge, from Wickford, Essex, paid the builder an initial deposit and several instalments before he ceased all contact and abandoned the project.

The Gutteridges hired the builder in November 2022 to construct an extension. After receiving £14,000, the builder completed only minimal work, demolishing parts of their home before vanishing. Mr Gutteridge described feeling "scarred for life" by the ordeal, which has left his family in distress and their home in disarray.

This case highlights broader issues within the building trade, where individuals face significant financial and emotional burdens due to rogue contractors.
