
Royal Navy Drones Found with Chinese Component Transmitting Data to Chinese IP
A Chinese-made component integrated into the Royal Navy's advanced unmanned minehunting vessels has been found to transmit data to a Chinese IP address. This discovery raises pertinent questions regarding the security of military hardware, particularly as Western powers increasingly rely on complex international supply chains.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the existence of the component but stated that investigations have yielded no evidence of a data breach. The component is reportedly a 4G modem, a standard piece of commercial off-the-shelf technology. While commercially available, its presence in sensitive military equipment, and its communication with a Chinese server, has prompted scrutiny.
These sea drones, valued at £1 million each, are designed for critical mine-clearance operations and are already in service. The incident underscores the inherent vulnerabilities when military assets incorporate foreign-sourced technology, a practice often driven by cost efficiencies and the globalisation of manufacturing. Critics contend that such reliance on external production, particularly from states considered geopolitical rivals, exposes Western defence capabilities to potential surveillance and interference. This situation highlights the persistent challenge of securing strategic assets within a globalised industrial landscape, where economic expediency frequently overshadows long-term security implications.
