Russian Jets Intercept RAF Spy Plane Over Black Sea, UK Ministry of Defence Confirms
A pair of Russian Su-27 fighter jets intercepted an unarmed Royal Air Force RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft operating in international airspace over the Black Sea, the UK Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The incident, described as a "potentially dangerous close pass", resulted in a formal protest lodged by London with Moscow.
The British Defence Secretary stated that the Russian aircraft conducted an "unsafe and unprofessional" manoeuvre, flying within several metres of the RAF plane. Such aerial encounters are not uncommon, particularly in regions adjacent to NATO and Russian spheres of influence. However, the proximity and manner of this interception have prompted official diplomatic engagement.
Western military operations in the Black Sea region are routinely scrutinised by Russia, which views these as encroachments on its security interests. Conversely, Western powers assert their right to operate in international airspace. These incidents underscore the persistent tensions and competing strategic objectives in a critical geopolitical theatre, where Russia seeks to project power and maintain its maritime dominance, while NATO allies conduct intelligence gathering and demonstrate presence.
