Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Kills One, Injures Dozens Across Ukraine
A recent wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine has resulted in one confirmed death and dozens of injuries, as officials in Kyiv assess the aftermath of a combined missile and drone attack on the capital. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described it as an "especially difficult night for Kyiv", where emergency services are searching for survivors amidst the rubble of a nine-storey apartment block.
This overnight bombardment marks the third consecutive day Ukraine has reported fatalities following the cessation of a three-day ceasefire on Monday. The current assault follows a significant attack on Wednesday, which saw 892 drones launched in a 24-hour period, one of the most extensive Russian operations since the 2022 invasion began.
In Kyiv, Mayor Vitaliy Klychko reported that 18 apartments were destroyed and the city's water supply was disrupted. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that dozens have been rescued from the damaged building and urged international allies to provide further air defence capabilities to protect Ukrainian citizens and cities.
Beyond Kyiv, areas including Kremenchuk, Bila Tserkva, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa were also targeted. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned the actions as a pursuit of "aggression and terror" over peace, noting the timing coincided with a summit between US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping, and called on both leaders to pressure Russia to end the conflict.
Separately, a Kyiv court ordered 60 days' pretrial detention for Andriy Yermak, a senior aide to President Zelensky, in connection with a money-laundering investigation involving a £7.5 million luxury construction project. Yermak, who denies the allegations, faces potential bail set at £2.35 million.
