Sadie Jefferson Retires After 75 Years at Portrush Pharmacy, County Antrim
Sadie Jefferson, a familiar presence in Portrush, County Antrim, has concluded a 75-year tenure at a local pharmacy, having begun her career there in 1951. Starting at the age of 15, Jefferson remained a constant fixture through multiple ownership transitions, serving generations of the town’s residents.
Decades of Service and Community Connections
The pharmacy, initially known as JGW Boggs Medical Hall when Jefferson commenced her employment, later became RG Macaulay's, Herons, Lloyds Pharmacy, and is now Gordons Chemists. Despite the name above the door changing, Jefferson’s commitment to the community remained steadfast. She noted that the enduring connections with local families, some spanning four generations, were a particular highlight.
Jefferson described her initial duties as demanding, involving the preparation of medicines and tablets. Robert Gordon, founder of Gordons Chemist, remarked on Jefferson's widespread recognition in Portrush, stating, "Everybody wants to call in here and say hello to Sadie." He also highlighted her longevity, noting she began work three years before his birth. Kathryn Dobbin, relief pharmacy manager, called it a "huge honour" to have worked alongside Jefferson.
Life Beyond the Pharmacy Counter
Beyond her daily work, Jefferson was actively involved in fundraising, including two skydives at age 80 for the Northern Ireland Hospice. For her retirement, she plans to continue her involvement with the Portrush heritage group, focusing on promoting and preserving the town's history. Her future activities also include gardening and socialising with friends, maintaining a commitment to an active lifestyle.
