Senior NHS Figures Summoned to Explain East Kent Maternity Failures to Parliamentary Committee
Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting has called for senior managers from the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust to be compelled to testify before the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee. This demand comes in the wake of a damning independent review into the Trust's maternity services, which uncovered the preventable deaths of 45 babies and severe brain damage in 73 others, along with injuries to 12 mothers, between 2009 and 2020.
Mr Streeting characterised the refusal of certain senior figures to engage with the review as "cowardice" and an "insult to the families who suffered avoidable loss and tragedy". The review, led by Dr Bill Kirkup, noted that a number of individuals declined to be interviewed, impeding a full understanding of the systemic failures that plagued the Trust's maternity care for over a decade. Dr Kirkup had previously exposed similar failings at the Morecambe Bay maternity unit.
The parliamentary committee now faces pressure to utilise its powers to summon those who withheld co-operation, ensuring accountability for the catastrophic deficiencies identified. The report detailed an environment where mothers were frequently ignored, and staff demonstrated a lack of compassion, alongside a pervasive culture of not listening to families' concerns.
