Shirley Freeman, Julia Stephen, David McColl Jailed For ‘House Of Terror’ Child Abuse

Shirley Freeman, Julia Stephen, and David McColl have received substantial prison sentences for their roles in the prolonged and brutal abuse of two young children. The victims, a boy and a girl, were subjected to horrific treatment spanning several years within a household in South Lanarkshire.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how the children, aged nine and 11 at the time of their rescue, were routinely beaten with various implements including belts, wooden spoons, and coat hangers. Evidence presented detailed how the perpetrators withheld food, forcing the children to eat from bins and endure extreme hunger, often resorting to consuming toothpaste to stave off their hunger.

Beyond the physical violence, the children suffered profound psychological torment. They were made to stand for extended periods, subjected to constant verbal degradation, and forced to witness each other’s abuse. One victim recounted being told they would ‘end up in a box’ if they spoke out, a clear attempt to prevent them from disclosing the abuse.

Freeman, the children’s mother, was sentenced to six years and nine months. Stephen, the grandmother, received a seven-year sentence. McColl, the stepfather, was jailed for six years. The court’s judgement underscored the severity and systematic nature of the abuse, with authorities confirming the children are now in safe care.
