Singapore and South Korea Recall Trader Joe's Seasoning Over Banned Poppy Seed Content

Food safety regulators in Singapore and South Korea have initiated a recall for 'Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend'. The product, popular in Western markets, contains poppy seeds, which are strictly illegal in both Asian countries.

Strict Controls on Poppy Seeds in Asia

Singapore's Food Agency (SFA) issued a directive for the recall, asserting that poppy seeds, even in minute quantities, are classified as a prohibited item under the country's Misuse of Drugs Act. Similarly, South Korean authorities have enforced the recall based on their own stringent drug control legislation.

The consumption of poppy seeds is a culinary staple in many parts of the world, including the UK and the USA, where they are widely used in baked goods and as flavourings. However, the seeds can contain trace amounts of opiates, leading to their prohibition in certain jurisdictions with strict anti-drug policies.
