SpaceX Files for US IPO, Potentially Elevating Elon Musk to Trillionaire Status
SpaceX, the aerospace manufacturer and satellite communications corporation founded by Elon Musk, has formally submitted its intentions for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the US stock market. This move, which could commence as early as next month under the ticker symbol SPCX, is anticipated to be the largest in the history of Wall Street.
The valuation placed on SpaceX is $1.25tn. Given Musk's majority ownership, his stake in the company could exceed $600bn, thereby elevating his personal net worth to a trillion-dollar figure and cementing his position as the world's wealthiest individual.
The extensive filing offers a detailed look into SpaceX's financial performance. Last year, the company reported revenues of $18.6bn, alongside a net loss of $4.9bn. In the initial three months of this year, sales reached $4.7bn, yet a net loss of $4.3bn was recorded. SpaceX's balance sheet indicates assets totalling $102bn, balanced against $60.5bn in debt.
Concerns Over xAI Chatbot and Regulatory Scrutiny
The IPO documentation also addresses ongoing scrutiny surrounding xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence firm, which is under investigation following the use of its chatbot, Grok, to generate sexualised deepfakes in January. Musk has indicated an intention to integrate xAI into SpaceX, consolidating his AI ventures under the aerospace entity. SpaceX also holds ownership of X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, acquired by Musk in 2022.
Moreover, the filing reveals the financial specifics of a recent agreement between SpaceX and AI competitor Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot. Anthropic is set to pay $15bn annually for access to data centres located in the American South, facilities intended for Musk's xAI.
These developments occur shortly after Musk's legal defeat against OpenAI and its chief, Sam Altman. Musk's lawsuit, alleging a breach of a non-profit contract by OpenAI, was dismissed by a jury due to the expiration of the filing period.
