Starmer Considers Increased Senedd Powers During Call With New Plaid Cymru First Minister
Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, has informed Wales' new First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth, that he is "open to a conversation" regarding increased powers for the Senedd, according to a Welsh government statement. These comments were made during a telephone call to congratulate ap Iorwerth on his appointment as Plaid Cymru's first First Minister.
During the discussion, ap Iorwerth advocated for further devolution, alongside greater funding for Welsh public services and rail infrastructure. Sir Keir suggested that these matters could be addressed at an envisioned meeting in June with the leaders of the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed the discussion, stating that both leaders "agreed on the importance of partnership to deliver for the people of Wales." The Welsh government's written statement further detailed that the First Minister expressed a desire to negotiate on the Barnett formula, fair funding, borrowing powers, and rail. It also highlighted that a Senedd majority, including the Labour group, supports enhanced powers.
The conversation also touched upon cooperation concerning the cost of living, particularly in light of the ongoing Middle East conflict's economic reverberations. This diplomatic exchange aligns with standard protocol for the Prime Minister to engage with a newly appointed First Minister.
