Student Accused of Murder Following Housemate's Stabbing in Filton
Zack Coughlan, 23, has been formally charged with the murder of Jamie Collins, 21, following an incident at their shared residence on Cleve Road in Filton, north Bristol. Emergency services discovered Mr Collins in the rear garden of the property in the early hours of 9 April, where he was pronounced dead from multiple stab wounds.
Both men were students at the University of the West of England. Mr Coughlan appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court, where he confirmed his personal details. He was subsequently denied bail and remanded in custody ahead of a further appearance at Bristol Crown Court.
Detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Team utilised CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and extensive area searches to identify and apprehend the suspect. Police indicated that the victim's death likely occurred several hours prior to the discovery of his body.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth extended sympathies to Mr Collins's family, stating, "Our thoughts are with Jamie's family at this hugely difficult time." She assured that specialist officers are providing support and regular updates. DCI Edgeworth also acknowledged the shock within the community and the university, confirming that high-visibility patrols are ongoing and support mechanisms are in place for those affected.
