
Sturgeon Regrets Retaining Peter Murrell as SNP Chief Executive in 2014
Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister, stated she now wishes she had not retained Peter Murrell, her estranged husband, as the Scottish National Party's chief executive upon assuming leadership in 2014. Sturgeon described Murrell as a pivotal figure in the party’s earlier successes under Alex Salmond.
Addressing an audience at a book festival in Wales, Sturgeon explained her initial reasoning: she believed it was unfair for Murrell to lose his position due to her promotion. However, she conceded, “Definitely, with the benefit of hindsight, that was a decision I wish I had taken differently.”
Murrell recently pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP over a 12-year period, using party funds for personal luxury items including vehicles, jewellery, and cosmetics. He remains in custody awaiting sentencing on 23 June.
Sturgeon reiterated that Murrell's offending, which commenced in 2010, predated her election as party leader. She also rejected accusations of suppressing inquiries into the SNP's accounts during her tenure, asserting that no suggestion of embezzlement by Murrell arose until 2023.
