Sylvia Zin Urges Trump to Prioritise Husband's Release with President Xi
Sylvia Zin, the spouse of prominent US-educated scholar Xu Zhangrun, has publicly called upon former US President Donald Trump to raise her husband's arbitrary detention directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The appeal comes ahead of anticipated diplomatic engagements between the two leaders.
Xu Zhangrun, a former law professor at Tsinghua University, was initially detained in July 2020 on allegations of 'soliciting prostitutes'—a charge widely dismissed by human rights organisations as politically motivated. His arrest followed his outspoken criticism of the Chinese Communist Party and Xi Jinping's consolidation of power. He was subsequently banned from teaching and stripped of his academic positions, effectively silencing a critical voice within Chinese intellectual circles.
Mrs. Zin's plea underscores the persistent challenges faced by families of US citizens and residents held in China. Human rights advocates routinely highlight Beijing's practice of using arbitrary detention and politically charged accusations against dissidents and foreign nationals, often in retaliation for perceived slights or to exert diplomatic leverage. Western governments, including the US, have been accused of insufficient action to secure the release of such individuals, with critics pointing to material interests often overshadowing human rights concerns in bilateral relations with Beijing.
The US State Department has previously acknowledged the cases of US citizens wrongfully detained in China, urging their immediate release. However, tangible progress remains elusive for many families, who view direct, high-level intervention as their most viable recourse.
