Thames Water Reports £1.1 Billion Profit as Customer Bills Increase
Thames Water, the UK's largest water and wastewater provider, has declared a post-tax profit of £1.1 billion for the 12 months concluding in March. This financial upturn follows a period where customer bills were increased, a move that contributed to the company's revenue reaching £2.3 billion.
Despite the reported profit, the utility's net debt escalated by £1.5 billion, now standing at £18.3 billion. The company attributes a portion of its increased profitability to the revaluation of its extensive infrastructure assets.
The announcement comes as Thames Water continues to face public scrutiny regarding its operational performance and environmental record. The company has previously been criticised for sewage discharge incidents and its substantial debt burden. The reported profit, set against a backdrop of rising charges for households, is likely to reignite debate over the financial structures and regulatory oversight of privatised utility services in the UK.
