Thornton Cleveleys Coastguard Rescues Two, Woman Dies After Sea Dog Rescue Attempt
A woman has died following a rescue attempt in the sea at Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, after she and a man entered the water to retrieve their dog. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, with emergency services responding to reports of two people in difficulty near Fleetwood Beach Cafe.
The coastguard successfully rescued both individuals, who are understood to be in their sixties, shortly after 20:30 BST. However, the woman was later pronounced dead in hospital. The man remains in a critical condition, according to Lancashire Police.
Their dog, the subject of the rescue, was found “safe and well”. Police have stated there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death, and efforts to identify her next of kin are ongoing.
This incident follows a concerning trend of water-related fatalities across the UK, with at least 15 deaths reported in the past week after a period of warm weather. This figure includes 12-year-old Junior Slater, who died after swimming in the River Ribble in Ribchester earlier in the week.
