
Tinder, Zoom Adopt World ID Iris Scans to Combat AI Impersonation After $1 Billion Scams
Tinder and Zoom are implementing advanced iris-scanning technology from World ID to provide a "proof of humanity" badge, enabling users to confirm they are not AI-driven bots. This move addresses escalating concerns over artificial intelligence’s capacity to create convincing fake profiles and impersonate individuals online.
World ID: The Verification Process
World ID, previously known as Worldcoin and World Network, is part of Tools for Humanity, a start-up co-founded and chaired by Sam Altman, head of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. Users can submit to an iris scan either via an online application or a dedicated orb-shaped scanning device. Upon successful verification, individuals receive a unique identification code, their World ID, stored on their smartphone.
The new World ID app and its partnerships with Tinder and Zoom were announced at a San Francisco event on Friday. The event featured AI-altered historical video footage of figures such as Walter Cronkite and Ronald Reagan discussing the necessity of human verification online. Altman stated that AI-generated content will soon surpass human-made content, emphasising the importance of distinguishing between the two.
