Tony Bartlett Jailed for 18 Years Over Murder of Four-Week-Old Son Atticus

Tony Bartlett, 33, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of his four-week-old son, Atticus. The infant sustained fatal injuries, including a fractured skull, while in his father's care in December 2022.

Preston Crown Court heard that Bartlett, from Douglas, Isle of Man, had consumed a significant quantity of alcohol before inflicting the injuries on his child. Medical examinations revealed Atticus suffered a fractured skull, an eye injury, and bleeding on the brain, consistent with violent shaking and blunt force trauma.

The court was informed that Bartlett had consumed 15 cans of lager and had been awake for approximately 36 hours before the incident. He claimed the child had fallen from his arms, but medical evidence contradicted this account. The jury, after a 10-day trial, found Bartlett guilty of murder.

Judge Nicholas Gaskell stated that Bartlett's actions had robbed Atticus of his life, describing the infant as defenceless. The conviction and sentencing underscore the severe consequences of child cruelty, particularly when exacerbated by intoxication. The case highlights the devastating impact on families and the broader community when such egregious acts occur.
