Tornado Sweeps Through Hubei Province, Leaving Two Dead, Dozens Injured in Central China
A rare and powerful tornado tore through central China’s Hubei province, claiming two lives and injuring 21 people across the cities of Ezhou and Huanggang. The extreme weather, which occurred on Friday evening, has led to extensive damage and disruption.
Initial reports indicate one person died in Ezhou and another in Huanggang as the tornado, described by local meteorological authorities as intense, swept through populated areas. The injured have been transported to local medical facilities, with their conditions yet to be fully disclosed by Chinese authorities.
Footage circulated online depicted debris flying through the air, significant structural damage to buildings, and uprooted trees. Power infrastructure was severely affected, leaving thousands of households without electricity. Emergency services were immediately mobilised for search and rescue operations, as well as to commence clearance of the considerable wreckage.
China experiences tornadoes less frequently than some other regions globally, though they are not entirely uncommon, particularly during the humid summer months. This incident underscores the destructive potential of such weather phenomena, prompting local government responses focused on disaster relief and infrastructure restoration.
