Trump Seeks £115m to Revitalise Notorious Alcatraz Prison
Former US President Donald Trump is seeking an investment of $152m (£115m) to facilitate the reopening of the notorious Alcatraz prison. This substantial sum forms part of his proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year, aimed at transforming the site into a “state-of-the-art secure prison facility”.
Known as 'The Rock' and situated near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz was once America's most formidable maximum-security prison before its closure in 1963. It has since operated as a popular tourist attraction under the stewardship of the National Park Service.
Political Opposition and Practical Concerns
The ambitious proposal has been met with considerable apprehension. Californian politicians and former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi have voiced strong objections, labelling the plan as “absurd” and a “waste of taxpayer dollars”.
Critics highlight significant logistical challenges, including the island's lack of existing running water and sewage systems, and the necessity of transporting all supplies by boat. Historically, Alcatraz was three times more expensive to operate than other federal prisons, a factor that contributed to its initial closure. Furthermore, there are concerns about sacrificing an iconic landmark that currently generates approximately $60m (£45m) in revenue as a tourist destination.
The $152m request represents a segment of a broader $1.7bn (£1.3bn) investment earmarked for the Bureau of Prisons. Trump previously stated his intention to direct various federal agencies to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ” to house “America's most ruthless and violent offenders”.
Alcatraz: A Brief History
Originally a naval defence fort, Alcatraz transitioned into a military prison before becoming a federal penitentiary in the 1930s. It famously housed notorious figures such as Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and has featured prominently in numerous films, solidifying its place in popular culture.
