UK Government Confirms Car Washes, Vape Shops Exempt From New Skilled Worker Visa Rules

The UK government's new skilled worker visa rules, due to take effect in July 2025, were presented as a measure to reduce net migration by primarily restricting sponsorship to graduate-level positions with a minimum salary threshold of £41,700.

However, recent Home Office guidance has clarified that occupations like 'car wash attendant', 'vapour shop manager', and 'fast food chef' will remain on the list of eligible roles for foreign worker sponsorship. This exemption applies even if these positions do not meet the new graduate-level qualification or salary requirements.

This policy decision has drawn scrutiny, particularly given the government's declared commitment to curbing immigration. Critics point out that these exemptions effectively undermine the stated intent of the visa reforms, enabling businesses in specific sectors to continue recruiting from abroad for roles that often pay significantly below the new £41,700 threshold.
