UK Recycling Centres Discover Used Weight-Loss Injection Pens in Household Waste
A growing number of used weight-loss injection pens are appearing in household recycling and waste, presenting a substantial hazard for workers at processing facilities. Managers at various UK recycling centres have highlighted the trend, coinciding with a surge in prescriptions for medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are administered via pre-filled pens.
Disposal Risks and Protocols
The improper disposal of these sharps poses a direct risk of needle-stick injuries, potentially exposing recycling operatives and members of the public to bloodborne pathogens. Current guidelines mandate that such medical waste be placed in dedicated sharps bins, then returned to pharmacies or disposed of via specific council collection services.
However, many users are evidently discarding the pens directly into general waste or recycling bins, often wrapped in tissue or plastic bags, which offers inadequate protection against puncture. Authorities are urging the public to adhere strictly to correct medical waste disposal protocols to safeguard public health and ensure the safety of waste management personnel.
