Ofcom Details Methods for Social Media Age Verification, Citing Photo ID and Facial Estimation
Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, has issued new guidance outlining various methods social media platforms could employ to verify user ages. The proposals aim to ensure users are at least 16 years old, a requirement under forthcoming regulations.
Among the suggested approaches are the use of official photo identification, digital ID systems, and banking information checks. Furthermore, the regulator has acknowledged facial age estimation technology as a viable option for determining if an individual meets the minimum age threshold.
This initiative comes as regulatory bodies globally increasingly scrutinise the unchecked access of younger users to online platforms, often citing concerns over content exposure and data privacy. The implementation of robust age verification is seen as a crucial step towards aligning platform operations with broader safeguarding objectives, though the practicalities and effectiveness of these methods will face considerable scrutiny from both industry and privacy advocates.
