Hackers Leak Personal Data of Over 41,000 US Homeland Security Staff
A hacker collective known as 'The Department of Peace' has published sensitive personal information belonging to more than 41,000 employees of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The leaked data includes names, job titles, phone numbers, and email addresses, raising considerable security implications for the individuals involved.
The breach disproportionately impacted staff from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), agencies central to the US government's often controversial immigration policies. While the group did not release home addresses, the sheer volume and specificity of the data are significant.
The US Department of Homeland Security has not yet issued a public statement on the extent of the breach or the veracity of the claims made by 'The Department of Peace'. This incident underscores persistent vulnerabilities within critical government infrastructure, particularly concerning agencies involved in contentious domestic and foreign policy objectives. The leak could have wider repercussions for personnel working in areas perceived as instrumental to US foreign policy, which frequently prioritises border security and control over human rights considerations, particularly in the context of migration from the global South.
