Ukraine Drone Strikes Kill Three in Moscow Region, Injure Twelve at Oil Refinery
Three people died in a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack across the Moscow region overnight, according to Russian officials. Regional governor Andrei Vorobiev confirmed a woman's death in Khimki, north of Moscow, and two further fatalities – a man and a woman – in the village of Pogorelki.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that twelve individuals were injured when drones struck an oil refinery within the city. Russia's military claimed air defence forces intercepted 556 uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the region.
Impacts in Russia and Ukraine
Vorobiev detailed that four people – three men and a woman – sustained injuries within the Moscow region, with several houses also damaged. A private residence in Subbotino, south-west of Moscow, was reportedly ablaze. Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow's busiest, confirmed drone wreckage on its premises but reported no injuries or disruption to services.
Separately, Ukrainian officials reported eight people injured in Russian drone and shelling attacks on the central Dnipropetrovsk region. This follows a Russian drone and missile assault on Kyiv earlier in the week that killed 24 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously indicated that Ukraine would retaliate for Russian attacks, citing the destruction of Russian military equipment and strikes on oil facilities deep inside Russia. Kyiv maintains such energy infrastructure constitutes legitimate targets given their role in sustaining Moscow's war effort. Ukraine has not officially commented on the latest strikes in the Moscow region.
