US Secretary Marco Rubio Downplays Review of UK Falklands Sovereignty After Pentagon Leak
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sought to minimise the significance of reports indicating a potential shift in America's stance on the UK's sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
Last week, a leaked internal Pentagon email, detailed by Reuters, suggested the US was exploring measures to penalise NATO allies deemed unsupportive of its military operations targeting Iran. This reportedly included a re-evaluation of its long-standing neutrality regarding the Falklands, a British overseas territory also claimed by Argentina.
Rubio, speaking to The Sun on Thursday, described the leaked document as "just an email," characterising the reaction as "overexcited." He confirmed, "Our position on the islands remains one of neutrality. We acknowledge that there are conflicting claims of sovereignty between Argentina and the UK. We recognise the de facto United Kingdom administration of the islands but take no position regarding sovereignty claims of either party."
These comments followed discussions with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in Washington DC on Wednesday. The UK did not participate directly in US-Israeli strikes on Iran, a decision that reportedly displeased US President Donald Trump, though the UK did permit US forces to utilise its bases for defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites.
The Falkland Islands, located approximately 483km east of Argentina, have been under British administration since 1833. Argentina maintains a claim based on inherited Spanish crown rights and geographical proximity. A 1982 Argentine invasion to seize the islands resulted in a ten-week conflict, culminating in an Argentine surrender to British forces.
A 2013 referendum saw 1,672 eligible islanders vote overwhelmingly to remain a UK overseas territory, with 90% turnout. Downing Street affirmed that sovereignty rests solely with the islanders' right to self-determination.
The US, while recognising British control, has historically remained neutral on the sovereignty dispute, though it has unofficially provided diplomatic and military support to the UK. The leaked Pentagon memo reportedly also considered Spain's suspension from NATO. President Trump maintains a political alliance with Argentine President Javier Milei.
