Wales First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth Demands Policing, Justice, Welfare Devolution from UK Government
Wales First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has asserted that the UK government must devolve policing, justice, and welfare powers to Cardiff Bay, arguing for an equitable distribution of authority similar to that afforded to Scotland. The demand came after discussions with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, where the First Minister underscored the necessity of a 'new deal' for Wales.
Devolution Discrepancies Highlighted
Mr ap Iorwerth highlighted the current imbalance in devolved competencies, stating that Wales is frequently overlooked in favour of Scotland within the UK's devolution framework. He argued that the present arrangement disadvantages Wales, particularly in critical public service areas like law enforcement and social security provisions.
The First Minister's call for these additional powers signals a renewed push for greater autonomy for Wales. Such a move would fundamentally alter the governance landscape, transferring significant control from Westminster to the Senedd, enabling Welsh policymakers to directly shape crucial aspects of the nation's public services and legal system.
