Wales Green Party Pledges Rent Controls and £1 Bus Fares in Senedd Election Manifesto
Green Party Outlines Key Proposals for Senedd Election
The Wales Green Party has launched its manifesto for the upcoming Senedd election, with a strong focus on addressing the cost of living crisis through comprehensive housing reforms and public transport initiatives. Welsh leader Antony Slaughter presented the party's agenda, which includes a one-year rent freeze followed by local authority-led rent caps.
Mr Slaughter announced plans to implement an initial rent freeze for twelve months, after which local councils would be empowered to establish 'rent pressure zones'. Within these zones, rent increases would only be permissible if landlords undertake genuine improvements to properties, particularly those enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, the party proposes an outright ban on 'no-fault evictions', aligning with existing legislation in Scotland and forthcoming changes in England.
Beyond housing, the manifesto pledges to cap bus fares at £1 for most passengers, offering free travel for individuals under 22 years of age. The party also aims to replace the current council tax system.
While the Wales Green Party does not anticipate forming the next Welsh government, Mr Slaughter expressed optimism that their policies could significantly influence post-election negotiations, particularly if they secure their first elected representatives in the Senedd. He emphasised that housing proposals represent the paramount concern within their 43-page document, stating, "The cost of living crisis is paramount... it all starts with housing."
