Shots fired at the Washington Hilton ballroom prompted the swift evacuation of President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice-President JD Vance by their Secret Service detail. The incident, occurring during a correspondents' dinner, led to widespread alarm as attendees, including senior government figures, dropped to the floor for cover.
Witnesses described hearing distinct 'low thudding' sounds consistent with semi-automatic fire, followed by the shattering of glass. Many dived under tables, uncertain if a gunman had entered the room where approximately two-and-a-half thousand people were gathered. Secret Service agents, clad in helmets and bulletproof vests, positioned themselves with weapons drawn, scanning the crowd for further threats.
Among those taking cover was FBI Director Kash Patel, who shielded his girlfriend as an agent rushed to their aid. Health Secretary RFK Jr., seated nearby, was also caught in the unfolding event. The incident raises pointed questions regarding security protocols, particularly given the President's prior near-fatal experience in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.
