Welsh Senedd Member Mike Hedges Proposes Mandatory Training for Rabbit Owners
A Welsh Senedd member has called for the introduction of mandatory training courses for individuals wishing to own rabbits. Mike Hedges, a Welsh Labour representative, stated that prospective owners should be prevented from acquiring rabbits until they have completed a course demonstrating their comprehension of the animals' welfare requirements.
Mr Hedges highlighted the high abandonment rate of rabbits, noting that they frequently become unwanted pets. He asserted that a significant number of rabbits are surrendered to welfare organisations because owners underestimate the commitment involved in their care. "I think people should go on a course before they're allowed to acquire a rabbit so they understand the needs of rabbits," Mr Hedges remarked, suggesting that such a measure would reduce instances of neglect and abandonment.
The proposal, however, has been met with scepticism from animal welfare groups. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF) dismissed the idea as "hare-brained", arguing that while education is crucial, a mandatory training course would be impractical and difficult to enforce. Instead, the RWAF advocates for greater public awareness and improved retail practices to ensure new owners are fully informed about rabbit care responsibilities.
