Woman Dies in English Channel Small Boat Crossing, Kent Police Investigate
A woman was declared deceased at Dover’s Western Docks after being found unresponsive on a small boat that had entered UK waters in the English Channel on Saturday. The Home Office stated that medical assistance was rendered, but the individual succumbed.
Channel Crossings Continue Despite Anglo-French Deal
Kent Police were called to the scene at approximately 15:10 BST. This incident underscores the ongoing human cost of irregular migration across the Channel. The Home Office released a statement acknowledging the “terrible dangers of small boat crossings” and reiterated its commitment to working with French counterparts to “prevent these perilous journeys.”
On Monday, 710 individuals crossed the Channel aboard 11 small boats, marking the highest single-day total for 2026. Prior to this, 9,852 people had completed the journey this year, a reported 40% reduction compared to the same period in 2025. Subsequently, at least 798 more people arrived on 11 small boats.
In April, the UK and France finalised a deal worth £662 million, purportedly to curb these crossings. The agreement, framed by the Home Office as a “landmark deal,” focuses on increased “enforcement action on beaches and put people smugglers behind bars.” This includes French deployment of drones, two helicopters, and an advanced camera system, alongside riot-trained police on French beaches, a measure intended to intercept both smugglers and migrants.
