Zambian Police Arrest Opposition Leaders After Presidential Election for Alleged Insurrection Plot
Zambian law enforcement has detained a number of senior opposition members, among them former Justice Minister Given Lubinda and ex-national security adviser Steven Moyo. The arrests follow the nation's presidential election, with police asserting the individuals are implicated in an alleged plot to incite an insurrection.
These detentions occurred just days after the contested vote, which saw significant disputes over the results. Hakainde Hichilema, the primary opposition candidate, has accused the authorities of attempting to assassinate him, a claim that adds a volatile dimension to the post-election landscape.
Further compounding the volatile situation, Mr. Hichilema's motorcade reportedly came under fire during a recent incident, intensifying accusations of political intimidation. The Zambian government has yet to provide substantive evidence publicly to support its claims of an insurrection plot, while the opposition continues to challenge the legitimacy of the election outcome and the subsequent arrests.
