Binance Users Withdraw £3.1 Billion Following Record Crypto Hack of Digital Assets
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance recorded substantial user withdrawals totalling approximately £3.1 billion within 24 hours. This outflow followed a cyber-attack that targeted a blockchain bridge, resulting in the compromise of digital assets estimated at £5.2 billion.
The breach, described by Binance as a 'sophisticated exploit' of its BNB Smart Chain, led to the immediate suspension of transactions on the platform. The company moved swiftly to upgrade its security protocols and implement additional safeguards to prevent future incursions.
While the affected assets represented a considerable sum, Binance stated that only a fraction of the compromised funds were successfully moved off the BNB Smart Chain. This incident underscores the persistent vulnerability of decentralised finance platforms to sophisticated cyber-attacks, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by the cryptocurrency sector despite considerable investment in protective measures.
