Buy Now Pay Later Sector Faces Stricter Affordability Checks, Consumers Risk Blocked Purchases
New governmental oversight for the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) industry will soon mandate rigorous affordability checks, a move that could block millions of consumers from accessing these credit services. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is implementing these regulations, which will classify BNPL as a regulated product, bringing it in line with traditional lending.
Impact on Consumers and Providers
Under the revised framework, BNPL providers will be legally obliged to conduct thorough assessments of a borrower's financial capacity before approving credit. This means checks will extend beyond simple credit scores, delving into income, existing debts, and spending habits. Consumers with a history of missed payments or high indebtedness may find their applications declined.
Campaigners have long called for tighter controls, citing concerns over the ease with which individuals, particularly younger demographics, can accumulate debt without sufficient understanding of the implications. While proponents argue BNPL offers flexible payment solutions, critics point to the spiralling debt experienced by some users.
For providers, the changes necessitate significant investment in compliance infrastructure and data analysis. The sector, which has seen explosive growth in recent years, will now operate under a more constrained environment, potentially impacting its business model and profitability. Consumers are advised to review their financial health and understand the new criteria to avoid unexpected rejections.
