British Teenager Dies in Vietnam Road Accident, Family Donates Organs
A British teenager, Orla Wates, 19, has died in Vietnam after reportedly being involved in a road accident. Miss Wates was said to be travelling the scenic Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam when she fell from a motorcycle.
According to reports from Viet Nam News, she was transported to Hanoi's Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, where she passed away on 2 April, with her parents by her side. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is providing support to Miss Wates' family during this difficult time.
A Generous Legacy
In a profound act of compassion, Orla's parents chose to donate her organs to the hospital. This selfless decision has provided life-saving opportunities for five critically ill Vietnamese patients. Her mother, Henrietta Wates, expressed that this was what Orla would have wanted, bringing the family comfort in knowing her life continues through others.
Orla had been exploring South East Asia before she was due to commence her studies at Durham University. Her family described her as 'beautiful, independent and very funny, with a sharp wit'.
Road Safety Concerns
The Ha Giang Loop is a popular route for tourists, often undertaken by motorcycle. Vietnam's roads are known for their hazards, with official figures indicating over 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries from traffic accidents in 2024 alone. The FCDO advises caution when travelling on Vietnamese roads.
