California Governor Primary: Becerra and Hilton Lead Crowded Field
California's gubernatorial primary election remains undecided, with a significant volume of postal ballots yet to be tallied. Early counts place Democrat Xavier Becerra, a former Health Secretary under President Joe Biden, and Republican Steve Hilton, a onetime senior adviser to former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, at the forefront of a heavily contested field.
The protracted count is standard for California's electoral system, which relies extensively on mailed ballots. The top two vote-getters, irrespective of party affiliation, will advance to the general election in November. This so-called 'jungle primary' system has previously raised concerns within the Democratic Party regarding the potential for two Republican candidates to proceed in the state, given California's strong liberal leanings where Democratic voters outnumber Republicans by approximately two-to-one.
The Contenders and Their Platforms
Mr. Becerra has centred his campaign on consumer protection, pledging to freeze insurance and utility rates. His background includes extensive service in Washington D.C. and California state offices. Mr. Hilton, known for his Fox News tenure and a past as a Conservative Party strategist in the UK, campaigns on making California more affordable through tax and regulation reductions. He has also advocated for increased state cooperation with the federal government on immigration enforcement and a rollback of 'sanctuary city' policies.
Billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer, a Democrat, currently occupies third place. The outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom is not seeking re-election due to term limits. The race has seen considerable spending, particularly by Mr. Steyer, contributing to it becoming the most expensive California gubernatorial contest on record.
The state, the most populous in the US and the world's fifth-largest economy, frequently serves as a battleground for contentious national issues, including immigration, climate policy, and housing affordability.
