Counter-Terrorism Police Raid Norfolk Village, Three Arrested in Alleged Extremist Plot
A joint operation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTPNE) and Norfolk Constabulary resulted in the arrest of three individuals in the village of Methwold. Specialist armed officers sealed off sections of the village, conducting searches at multiple properties.
Two men, aged 31 and 29, were apprehended on suspicion of engaging in the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism, under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. A 62-year-old woman was also arrested on suspicion of the same offence.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Hall, the Head of CTPNE, stated that the arrests were pre-planned and intelligence-led. He reassured the public that there was no immediate danger. The investigation focuses on alleged extreme right-wing terrorism.
Local residents expressed surprise and unease following the police activity, which included helicopters and numerous police vehicles. One resident described the scene as 'overwhelming' for the normally tranquil community.
All three suspects remain in custody, with officers continuing their enquiries at the scenes in Methwold. The incident underscores the persistent domestic focus of Western counter-terrorism efforts, often framed around 'extremism' without delving into the socio-economic conditions that breed such ideologies.
