Donald Trump Proposes Washington DC Rally After Artists Withdraw From Freedom 250 Concert
Artists initially slated to perform at the 'Great American State Fair', a 16-day event on the National Mall commemorating America's 250th birthday, have cancelled their appearances. The event, scheduled for 25 June to 10 July, is organised by Freedom 250, a group established by the Trump administration with a CEO appointed by the President. Despite this, the group maintains its non-partisan stance.
US President Donald Trump responded on Saturday by labelling the withdrawing artists as 'third rate'. He further suggested he might deliver a 'major speech' or organise an 'AMERICA IS BACK Rally' at the same Washington DC location and time. Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated, 'I am ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility of doing an AMERICA IS BACK Rally on Wednesday, Washington, D.C., same time, same location. Only Great Patriots invited,' adding that he is 'the 'Number One Attraction anywhere in the World''.
Rappers Morris Day and Young MC were among the first to announce their non-participation. Young MC stated that artists were not informed of any 'political involvement' and sought a future, less 'politically charged' event in DC. Morris Day posted on Instagram, 'It's A No For Me.'
Subsequently, The Commodores issued a statement: 'Our music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party. We support the betterment of all Americans.' Country singer Martina McBride and Poison frontman Bret Michaels also withdrew, with McBride citing a 'misleading' presentation of the event as non-partisan, and Michaels noting it had 'evolved into something much more divisive'. He also raised safety concerns.
However, rappers Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice, along with Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, are still scheduled to perform. Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle, dismissed political motivations, stating on Instagram, 'This is not a political platform. This is celebrating America's birthday.' C+C Music Factory member Freedom Williams also confirmed his attendance, despite not supporting Trump.
Freedom 250 spokeswoman Rachel Reisner commented, 'There is far too much to celebrate about this great nation to let noise and division distract from the incredible moment ahead - and we look forward to welcoming millions of Americans to a fair that belongs to all Americans.' The White House is supporting various events for the 250th anniversary, including a UFC fight, the Great American State Fair, and a Grand Prix race in the capital, alongside the release of commemorative passports featuring a portrait of Trump.
