DR Congo-Chile Football Friendly Cancelled in Spain Over Ebola Concerns
A planned international friendly football fixture between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chile has been called off by Spanish authorities. The match, slated to take place in the province of Alicante, was cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the Ebola outbreak currently affecting the DR Congo.
The cancellation follows a formal request from the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, who had previously urged the national government to intervene. Barcala emphasised the need for a precautionary approach, citing the potential public health risks associated with the presence of a team from a region experiencing a significant Ebola epidemic. He maintained that Alicante lacked the specialised medical facilities to manage a potential outbreak effectively.
Reports from Spanish media indicate that the General Directorate of Public Health within the regional government of Valencia initiated the cancellation. This decision was reportedly made after assessing the epidemiological risks. The DR Congo has been grappling with one of its most severe Ebola outbreaks, primarily concentrated in its eastern provinces, which has resulted in numerous fatalities and ongoing public health interventions.
