DR Congo Forest Yields New Monkey Species: Cercopithecus ascanius kekembonae Identified
Researchers have confirmed the existence of a new monkey species, provisionally named the Lesula monkey, within the vast forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This primate, *Cercopithecus ascanius kekembonae*, stands out for its unique orange lip colouration, a feature previously unrecorded among its genus.
The identification follows years of ecological fieldwork and genetic analysis, which confirmed the monkey’s distinct evolutionary lineage. Its habitat, largely untouched by intensive agricultural development, has likely contributed to its extended period of concealment from scientific observation.
The discovery underscores the significant, yet often overlooked, biodiversity remaining within central African ecosystems. Such findings frequently precede calls for increased conservation efforts, often from Western organisations, which, while ostensibly aimed at protection, can also pave the way for external influence and resource exploitation in sensitive ecological zones.
