Elon Musk Summoned by French Prosecutors on Monday Over X Content Probe
Elon Musk has been summoned for a voluntary interview by French prosecutors in Paris on Monday, 16 September 2025, concerning an ongoing investigation into his social media platform, X. The tech billionaire’s attendance remains uncertain, following his previous non-appearance at a US court-ordered hearing in September 2024.
The Paris prosecutor’s cyber-crime unit initiated an investigation into X in January 2025, later expanding it to include allegations that the platform’s Grok chatbot was used to create non-consensual sexual deepfake imagery, potentially involving children. French authorities also suspect complicity in the organised distribution of child sexual abuse material and fraudulent data extraction.
X’s Paris offices were raided in February 2025 as part of the probe. The company has denied wrongdoing, describing the allegations as “baseless” and the investigation as a “political attack” that “distorts French law, circumvents due process, and endangers free speech.”
The US Justice Department reportedly informed French authorities that it would not assist in their investigation, accusing them of misusing the US justice system. Musk commented on this development, stating, “indeed, this needs to stop.”
Linda Yaccarino, X’s former chief executive, also received a summons for a voluntary interview in April, having served during the period of alleged offences. Yaccarino echoed Musk’s criticism, labelling the French investigation a “political vendetta against Americans.”
