English Schools Face New Rules Limiting Branded Uniform Items from September
New government guidance, coming into force this September, will compel schools across England to reduce the financial burden of uniforms on parents. Under the updated regulations, schools will be restricted in the number of branded items they can require, capping them at three, alongside a tie for secondary school pupils.
Focus on Affordability and Supplier Transparency
The Department for Education’s statutory guidance, which was initially issued in 2021, aims to ensure uniform policies are clear, sustainable, and represent value for money. Schools are now expected to have single-supplier contracts, where these exist, regularly reviewed and re-tendered at least every five years. This measure seeks to prevent monopolies that often inflate prices for mandatory items.
Ministers maintain that these changes could save families hundreds of pounds annually. The guidance also stipulates that second-hand uniforms should be readily available, furthering the push for both affordability and environmental responsibility. Parents have long voiced concerns over the exorbitant costs associated with school uniforms, often compounded by specific supplier requirements and an excessive number of branded items.
