FBI Agents Kill Suspect Holding Hostages in California Chase Bank Standoff
A man holding multiple hostages inside a Chase Bank in Bakersfield, California, was shot and killed by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents following a prolonged standoff. The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed the suspect's death in an "officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel" on Wednesday.
The incident began on Tuesday afternoon when police responded to a bomb threat and reports of a man barricaded with several people inside the multi-story bank, located approximately 177km north of Los Angeles. Two hostages were released during negotiations on Tuesday. The remaining hostages were freed unharmed on Wednesday.
Bakersfield City Hall, the local police headquarters, and nearby buildings were closed, alongside multiple roads, as police negotiation teams established contact with the suspect. Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon stated that all available resources, including SWAT, bomb squad, and K9 teams, were deployed to the scene. The FBI's Hostage Rescue Team was also present. Chase Bank representatives confirmed awareness of the situation, noting the branch was empty and they were cooperating with authorities.
