France Arrests 780 After Paris Saint-Germain Victory Riots Injure 219
Clashes erupted across France following Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) victory in the Champions League final against Arsenal, leading to 219 injuries, with eight in a serious condition, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Among the injured were 57 police officers.
Authorities reported 780 arrests in connection with the violence, with over 450 individuals taken into custody. The unrest significantly disrupted public transport in Paris, including bus, train, and rail services.
In a related incident, one person died after an accident on Paris's ring road, which rioters had attempted to block overnight. Police mobilised thousands of officers to quell the disturbances.
Looking ahead, some 6,000 police are to be deployed for PSG's planned victory parade at the Eiffel Tower. Interior Minister Nuñez affirmed that security forces would adopt a "firm" approach, stating, "We allow freedom of assembly, but not excesses." He further claimed that the majority of those causing trouble were not PSG supporters but individuals seeking to instigate disturbances.
