French Protests: 1,000 Arrested After Demonstrations Across Nation
French authorities reported nearly 1,000 arrests after another day of large-scale demonstrations across the nation. Police stated that approximately 150,000 people participated in the protests on Saturday, though union organisers put the figure significantly higher, at 500,000. These figures represent a notable decrease from the peak of 1.5 million demonstrators recorded in March.
The protests primarily targeted President Macron's government and its policies. While there were isolated incidents of confrontation and property damage, officials asserted that the level of disorder did not reach the widespread rioting and looting that characterised previous weekends of unrest. The deployment of a substantial police presence, including riot squads and specialised units, was credited with containing potential escalations.
Observers note the ongoing challenge for the government to manage public dissent while maintaining order. The persistence of large-scale protests, despite a reduction in their most violent manifestations, indicates a continued undercurrent of public dissatisfaction.
